Dr Abdulaziz Al Rajhi

Dr. Abdulaziz AlRajhi is a graduate of King Saud University (KSU). He has completed his Ophthalmology Residency followed by Anterior Segment Fellowship at the King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital (KKESH) in 1997. He continued his postgraduate training with sessions in Rome, Italy and at the Jules Stein Eye Institute (JSIE), Los Angeles, USA. As well as several Leadership and Business courses.

He left KKESH as a Senior Consultant in 2003 to start his career in International Ophthalmology. It lasted more than 10 years. Where he held the following positions, among many:

  • Co-Chair Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) –International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) 2003-2014.
  • President of Middle East Africa Council of Ophthalmology (MEACO) 2007-2014.
  • Board Member and Vice President, International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO).
  • Lead the foundation of Prevention of Blindness Union (PBU) as the Managing Director 2009-2014.

He moved to the Private Sector for 2 years then returned to the public sector in 2017 as the:

  • Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of KKESH Jan 2017

These are some of his accomplishments:

  • Organized the 7th General Assembly of IAPB in Dubai, UAE 2004.
  • Coordinated and lead the global effort to produce 4 Global World Health Organization (WHO) resolutions 2003- 2013.
  • Established 5 Subspecialty societies in MEACO
  • President of the World Ophthalmology Congress. (WOC) 2012, 16 – 20 February 2012, Abu Dhabi, UAE

It is, to date, the Largest Ophthalmology meeting in the history of the Middle East & Africa. With 10’000 participants.

Awards and Recognitions

  • G.O.H. Naumann Award, for International Ophthalmology Activities, ICO 2018.
  • Achievement Award, AAO 2015.
  • Global Achievement Award, IAPB in 2008, as the first one from the region to receive it.
  • Saudi Ophthalmological Society (SOS) Gold Medal
