Dr. Sami Al Shahwan is currently the Chairman of Scientific Board of Ophthalmology, Saudi Commission for Health Specialties.
He is the Director of Fellowship and Residency Training Program in Ophthalmology at King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital since 2015.
In 2017, he was appointed as the (DIO) Designated Institutional Official of the ACGME-I (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education – International) and SCFHS (Saudi Commission for Health Specialties).
Dr. Shahwan is also the Consultant for Training and Development of Ophthalmology Program in the Kingdom, Saudi Commission for Health Specialties.
He is a member of the Glaucoma Division as Senior Academic Consultant at King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital.
He became Associate Chief of Glaucoma (2011-2015), and Acting Chief of Glaucoma (2011-2013).
Dr. Shahwan graduated as Bachelor Degree in Medicine and Surgery from the College of Medicine at King Saud University in Riyadh in year 1994. He completed his Residency Training in Ophthalmology at the Joint Residency Program at the King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital and King Saud University in year 1999 and was selected as “Best Chief Resident” during his training and became “Resident of the Year” in 1996-1997. He completed subspecialty fellowship in Anterior Segment at King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in year 1999 where he became a Chief Fellow, and
he completed subspecialty fellowship in Glaucoma at King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in year 2000.
He has been participating in several academic activities, giving lectures and presenting several cases since 2000 up to present. He has been actively participating as speaker in both local and international conferences, and has more than 50 research publications.
He is an active member of Saudi Ophthalmology Society since 1996, American Academy of Ophthalmology Society since 1996, and Editorial of the Middle East African Journal Ophthalmology.
Dr. Shahwan received several awards, in year 2012 as Best Research Award in Saudi Ophthalmology Society (SOS). In year 2006 as Best Research Award in SOS. He received a Shield of Appreciation from SOS in year 2018.
Dr. Shahwan also received Shield of Recognition from the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties as King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital has passed the Institutional Accreditation from May 2019-May 2023.
